Baby it's cold outside...
written by Frank Loesser in 1944
Ever notice how this song is about date rape?
I really can’t stay - But baby it’s cold outside
I’ve got to go away - But baby it’s cold outside
This evening has been - Been hoping that you’d drop in
So very nice - I’ll hold your hands, they’re just like ice
My mother will start to worry - Beautiful, what’s your hurry
My father will be pacing the floor - Listen to the fireplace roar
So really I’d better scurry - Beautiful, please don’t hurry
Well Maybe just a half a drink more - Put some records on while I pour
The neighbors might think - Baby, it’s bad out there
Say, what’s in this drink - No cabs to be had out there
I wish I knew how - Your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell - I’ll take your hat, your hair looks swell
I ought to say no, no, no, sir - Mind if I move a little closer
At least I’m gonna say that I tried - What’s the sense in hurting my pride
I really can’t stay - Baby don’t hold out
Ahh, but it’s cold outside
I simply must go - But baby, it’s cold outside
The answer is no - Ooh baby, it’s cold outside
This welcome has been - How lucky that you dropped in
So nice and warm — Look out the window at that storm
My sister will be suspicious - Gosh, your lips look so delicious
My brother will be there at the door - Waves upon a tropical shore
My maiden aunt’s mind is vicious - Gosh your lips are delicious
Well maybe just a cigarette more - Never such a blizzard before
I’ve got to get home - But baby, you’ll freeze out there
Say, lend me your comb - It’s up to your knees out there
You’ve really been grand - I’ll thrill when you touch my hand
But don’t you see - How can you do this thing to me
There’s bound to be talk tomorrow - Think of my life long sorrow
At least there will be plenty implied - If you caught pneumonia and died
I really can’t stay - Get over that old out
Baby, it’s cold outside
Really the entire song applies to date rape, but the bold parts are just especially obvious. Even though she repeatedly insists that she wants to leave and directly says “the answer is no,” he continues to reply with complimenting her physical appearance to persuade her to stay. This supports a rape culture in which it suggests to males that you can convince a female to do what you want her to do by simply complimenting her physical appearance. While she offers how her staying at his place will affect her reputation, he argues that her leaving (and holding out) will hurt his pride and thus sufficient reasoning for her to stay. And of course it makes the reference to him putting something in her drink to make her stay. Plus, did you know the female voice in the song is called “The Mouse” and the male “The Wolf?” Maybe this holiday season you can keep this in mind and switch radio stations or skip to the next song whenever it comes on.

Gender Across Borders is planning a series about hip-hop, resistance, and feminism for mid-January. We are seeking articles that tie together an analysis of race and gender with a consideration of the impact of music on social movements. Those with knowledge of music and/or a familiarity with resistance movements in countries that have experienced war or occupation are encouraged to submit. A broad range of material is welcome, from profiles of particular artists to commentary on the connection between hip-hop and resistance. Articles can focus on the United States or on other countries. Feel free to pitch your own ideas! You know you want to, reblog if your friends will too.

I love these guys.
I just wrote this little chorus to a song that doesn’t have a certain future. Mer was here during the birth of it so I wanted to post it so she could hear the final product, but your input is welcome too!
Is it worth more development?
Why do I always screw up comments I try to make?? I wasn’t finished but I hit the wrong thing & that was that. Anyways…I’m glad I did because it’s awesome. & I like how the very beginning sounds Shadows Collide-ish. Good job :)
Watch this little kid play the Ukulele and sing Obladi Oblada by the Beatles. So much cuteness in one video. Watch the rest of this videos HERE.
Favorite part: 0:40 when he closes his eyes and goes right into it.
